The Power of Social Media 1

I know there are lots of people who despise social media.  They won’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.  I, however, am not one of those people.  I absolutely LOVE social media and the impact it has had on my life.  In addition, to staying in touch with family members that I do not get to see and talk to as often, I have met new family members, reconnected with many high school and college classmates, and met new people from all over the world (yes…the world!)

#TrueStory – One morning I was lying in bed, scrolling through my Instagram feed.  Smiling at pictures of babies and food (I’m a foodie in case you didn’t know) and agreeing with many of the motivational quotes, when I saw a post that said:

“Who wants to come on my radio show and talk about creativity?”

I thought, “Wow I would love to!”  So I “liked” the picture and commented.  This is what I said:

“Let’s chat! I’m an accountant but I employ lots of creativity in the way I operate my business and engage with my clients.”

She was totally intrigued and asked for more information.  So I “DMed” her (for those who don’t know that means I sent her a private message) and told her about the annual client appreciation picnic that I host and how the 10th year doing the picnic I hired a videographer and we recorded a music video to Pharrell’s song “Happy”.  She LOVED IT and sent me an invitation to be on her radio show.  Well it turns out she lives in the U.K. and I would have never met her if it hadn’t been for social media.

Here’s a link to the radio interview if you want to “give it a listen” (in my best British accent).

Like you, Bernadette, I absolutely LOVE social media! People don’t know what they’re missing out on by choosing not to be “on” social media. I’ve made the best friends and reconnected with amazing people because I’m on social media #TrueStory Years ago, I met a speaker who was part of my advanced Toastmasters group. We hadn’t seen each other in years when he reached out to say hi on LinkedIn. As it turned out, he and my cousin are members of the same church and she mentioned that we were cousins. Instant credibility! He started following me and liking my post. That’s the beauty of social media!
