Why Slow Travel? A Different Way to Experience Living Abroad

When I started sharing The Intentional Journey, one question kept coming up:

Why slow travel?

Because I’m not really trying to see the world as a tourist. I’m trying to experience what it might feel like to live in different places.

After four years of living in Mexico, I know there’s a huge difference between visiting a city and actually building a life there.

A week can tell you whether you enjoyed the restaurants, attractions and beaches. It probably can’t tell you how you feel about grocery shopping there, working a regular workday, getting around without a car or simply waking up on an ordinary Tuesday with nowhere special to go.

That’s what I want to know.

Slow travel gives me time to settle into a rhythm. Instead of rushing from destination to destination, I can experience everyday life and pay attention to the things that would actually matter if I decided to stay.

And there’s another piece of this for me…

I’m not in a hurry.

I’ve spent a lot of my life moving toward the next goal, the next accomplishment and the next thing I’m supposed to do. This season is different.

I can explore. I can change my mind. I can fall in love with a city and still leave it.

The destination matters… but so does the journey.

That’s why I’m choosing slow travel.

Watch the video below to hear more about why slow travel is such an important part of The Intentional Journey.
